Persistent criticism of Hinduism by the followers of the dominant monotheistic faiths during the last few centureis has eroded the confidence of many Hindus in their religious tradition. The resulting defeatist approach frequently leads to attempts to prove that the essentials of Hinduism are the same as those of Christianity and Islam, and to excise or relegate to the background the practices that are different from those of other religious traditions.
